計畫英文摘要

Taiwan is located on the active orogenic belt. The dynamic nature of the geologic processes frequently causes geological disasters. Although studies on the active faulting have been rather successful in the recent years, a fully-discussed and well-geometrically controlled map of the active faults in Taiwan is highly demanded in order to provide basic information for the disaster-control and public construction.

The project, which is composed of three phases, is proposed by a research group to fulfill the short-term, the mid-term and the long-term goals of the active fault study. The one-year short-term goal is to accomplish the compilation of all information relating to active faults to review and discuss The five-year mid-term goal is to proceed with the studies of fault segmentation, fault trenching, microstratigraphy, microstructures, dating and paleoseismicity of the active faults. The long-term goal is to establish an official organization to promote further studies of active faults in Taiwan on the one hand. On the other hand, the long-term goal also goes on to proceed some basic researches on the neotectonism, recurrence interval and disaster assessment.

The plan of the project is to accomplish the following items:

1.a preliminary review of active fault in Taiwan

2.detailed proposal for the active fault study in the short-term, the mid-term and long-term, respectively.
